I usually work during the night, 'self-isolating' at this table that I made a couple of years ago, beneath a photograph of a curious eighteenth-century Neapolitan sculpture, The Veiled Christ by Giuseppe Sanmartino, said to have been created through alchemy. As I write about time, I occasionally turn the hourglass and listen to the soft steadiness of its seeping sand.
