My desk now is wherever I can spot a table that a child is not sitting next to. Sometimes its the work station in the living room, sometimes the dining table, but lately it's mostly in one of the rooms that the kids never set foot in - their bedrooms. Writing about wartime rape in the Roman Empire surrounded by dinosaurs, glitter, and crayons makes the horror more horrifying, the past less distant. It makes me count rather than the number of days I have not been to my office, my blessings.
